Why babies in Finland sleep in cartboard boxes – Health – Human Movement

In Finland all pregnant women get a Starter Kit including clothes, sheets, diapers and toys. At the bottom is a mattress so the box can also be used as a bed. The government is giving away these boxes for 75 years now.
It’s a tradition that goes back to the 1930s and it is designed to give all children an equal start in life.

Many children from all walks of life spend their first nights in the box. Some say that the box even has made Finland one of the countries with the lowest child mortality rates in the world.

Mothers can also opt for a fee of 140 euros, but 95 percent prefers the Starter Kit, which is worth a lot more. In the 1940s and 1950s the box not only helped poor parents with the basic stuff that a baby needs, it also forced pregnant women to get checked by a doctor because the women needed to pick up the box at the doctor before the fourth month of her pregnancy.

Meanwhile the baby box, which is located just at the post office today, has become a ritual in Finland. But above all for Finns it is the symbol of equality and equal opportunities.

Why is it cool?

I find it so remarkable how scandinavian countries have so many cool solutions. It is so smart but yet so simple. It seems that in those country humanity is one of te most important values.

In Holland we are also doing very good but I Think we can a learn a lot from the scandinavians about, educations, humanity and simplicity.
